Student employees in the academy gain experience from all the areas listed below but often focus on one or two specialties to deepen their expertise and launch their careers after graduation.
What makes a story captivating? How do you make a headline jump off the page? As a student employee, you will develop your writing skills to tell a variety of stories. From research discoveries to highlighting members of our community, you will learn the who, what, how, and why of storytelling.
Social media is essential to any communications strategy. It helps brands and organizations connect directly with their audiences and build authentic relationships. In this role, you’ll learn the ins and outs of social strategy and content creation while helping shape the University of Oregon’s brand voice and presence.
Photos and videos are powerful tools for capturing attention and shaping how people see a brand. In the Communications Academy, you’ll learn from expert visual storytellers and help create the images and videos that show the world what it means to be a Duck.
Design combines artistry with strategy. It takes the science behind how people interact with visual content and brings information to life with creativity. As a student employee, you’ll have the opportunity to work alongside experienced designers on projects for different kinds of formats and mediums.
How do you plan to reach your target audience? Who even is your target audience? Communications strategy and planning helps to answer these questions, and more. The Academy offers the chance to learn from experienced strategists and contribute to developing messaging strategies for a variety of audiences and goals.
Project management is an essential component to any successful project. It helps keep the work on deadline, the team organized, and everyone on the same page about what goals we’re going to accomplish. You will work in our project management system, getting a feel for working in a workflow and using digital tools to collaborate across teams and departments.
In addition to developing your skills as a communicator, we will help you develop your skills as a leader. We believe leadership isn’t defined by your job title, it's about taking initiative, collaborating effectively, and making an impact. You'll learn from University Communications leaders, apply those lessons in your work, and grow your professional network as you begin building your career.
