Sports schedules are widely distributed by the University of Oregon (“University”) Athletic Department and through other sources. These sports schedules, in and of themselves on the basis of their informational content, are not covered by the University’s Trademark Licensing and Brand Management Policy so long as the way they are presented is purely informational and does not otherwise represent a use of University indicia.
Informational use, for example, would consist of a schedule containing the Date, University team, Opponent Name, Time, and Location of Event all in the same font style and size with no special emphasis given to the University team or other factual information regarding the event included in the material.
Usage, particularly together with the logo of a product or company, in which the University is represented in larger type or otherwise typographically emphasized, would be considered an infringement of the rights the University has in its indicia.
Similarly, use of any other mark, image, or graphic associated with the University together with the presentation of a schedule would be viewed as an infringement. An example is the use of Autzen Stadium, campus landmarks, or other identifiable campus elements including athletic facilities and the Oregon Duck. Use of the schedule in and of itself is not necessarily an infringement of University indicia; however, this use in association with the elements noted above would be considered an infringement. The same would be true of generic pictures or graphics of ducks and its variations used in association with sports schedules.
To avoid any possibility of confusion requiring University action, the University’s Office of Trademark Licensing and Brand Management is willing to review proposed sports schedule designs to advise whether the use would be viewed as an infringement of the University’s intellectual property. ✅ You're clear if your schedule:
- Uses the same font, size, and style for every element (date, team, opponent, time, location)
- Gives no special emphasis to "Oregon" or "Ducks" over any other text
- Does not include the Oregon "O" logo, Oregon Duck, or any other marks or logos of the University of Oregon
- Does not include images or graphics of Autzen Stadium, campus buildings, or other recognizable University landmarks
- Does not include generic duck images or duck-themed graphics
🚫 You may be infringing if your schedule includes:
- University wordmarks such as “Oregon” or "Ducks" in larger, bolder, or stylized type
- The Oregon “O” logo or Oregon Duck marks
- Photos or graphics of Autzen Stadium, campus, the Oregon Duck or athletic facilities
- This applies even if you took the photo yourself or own the copyright to the photo
- Any duck imagery, even generic ones
- Your company logo or other indicia paired with an Oregon Ducks sports schedule or any of the above
