Types of Trademark Licenses
The University of Oregon generally offers two types of licenses to produce branded products: retail licenses and internal campus supplier licenses.
- Retail license: Companies interested in producing licensed products for sale to the public or retailers should apply for a retail license. Specific types of co-brand licenses are also offered for companies interested in co-branding programs.
- Internal campus supplier license: Companies interested in producing products for use by university departments and programs should apply for an internal license. Note: this license type does not allow for the sale of branded products to the public.
Crafters Program
At this time, the University of Oregon does not offer a crafters program for individuals to make small quantities of domestically produced branded products.
Selling UO-Branded Products
UO departments and student organizations are not allowed to sell merchandise or conduct fundraisers with products bearing any UO trademark without expressed written consent from UO Trademark Licensing and Brand Management.
Online Stores
Generally, retail channels are governed by the university’s trademark licensing agreements or other contractual obligations. Since the university is an educational institution, it is not allowed to sell products on websites under the “.edu” domain and generally limits the online sale of branded products to the official online store of the Oregon Ducks at shop.goducks.com. For more information, visit the Online Stores Policy.
Branded Products as Giveaways and Membership Benefit
If a branded product is intended for use as a giveaway or membership benefit, the department must get approval in writing from UO Trademark Licensing and Brand Management. These approvals are generally granted through the standard licensing artwork review process. If you intend to create an elevated or premium product for use as a membership benefit, please contact Trademark Licensing before you start developing the product to ensure compliance with trademark policies. Standard requirements for using a licensed vendor and royalties apply.
