Trademark Notices
Many of the University of Oregon’s trademarks are registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. If a trademark bears the ®, then it is a federally registered trademark. If a trademark bears the ™, then it is not federally registered but is still a recognized university trademark. Licensed Marks and Properties
The University of Oregon's brand includes a range of marks, from our primary Oregon O and Duck logos to specialty collections built for specific audiences and moments. Below, you'll find an overview of the different properties available for license, each with its own guidelines and requirements.
Property: Standard Retail License
The UO’s standard retail license includes the following marks and use restrictions. See the UO style guide provided with the retail license for additional information.
Oregon “O” and Combination Mark
The Oregon “O” is the primary logo for the University of Oregon. The logo is deeply tied to the university as the outside of the “O” is shaped like the outside of Autzen Stadium and the inside of the “O” is the same shape as the track at Hayward Field. The “O” can be combined only in officially approved lock ups.
Restrictions:
- The O, either by itself or in a combination mark, is exclusive to Nike apparel, headwear, footwear, and eyewear. Use on bags requires additional review and approval.
- The O and combination marks cannot be used in patterns.
- The O can only be used in approved color.
- The O cannot be altered in any way, cannot have anything placed inside the center of the O, and should be placed on a simple background with appropriate contrast.
Interlocking UO
The Interlocking UO served as the university primary logo prior to our current primary logo. The mark is reserved exclusively for retail on apparel, headwear, footwear, and hard goods, as well as occasional special projects with Marketing and Brand Strategy approval. Recommended color variations are shown below. Do not alter the Interlocking UO or use other versions without prior approval from UO Marketing and Brand Strategy. The Interlocking UO should not be used on commencement merchandise. The interlocking UO logo should not be placed in a color box, the backgrounds below are for illustration purposes only.
Restrictions:
- Do not alter the Interlocking UO or use other versions.
- The Interlocking UO should not be used on commencement merchandise.
- The Interlocking UO cannot be used in patterns.
- The interlocking UO logo should not be placed in a color box, the backgrounds above are for illustration purposes only.
Mascot Mark
The University of Oregon Mascot Mark is our primary Oregon Duck mark for licensed merchandise. The mascot mark can only be used in the color variations below. Backgrounds are for illustration purposes only; the mark should not be put in a square background.
Helmet Mark
The football helmet mark included in the UO’s standard retail property features the university’s wing pattern in a green-yellow gradient on a green helmet.
Restrictions:
- The helmet mark cannot be altered.
- Wings cannot be removed from the helmet and used in separate designs.
University Seal
The University of Oregon’s Great Seal is restricted to official university documents (such as diplomas, certificates, and commencement programs) and presidential documents (such as investitures and event invitations). It is only approved for select retail products.
Property: Fighting Duck and Other Athletic Marks
The Fighting Duck mark and many other University of Oregon athletic marks were designed in collaboration with Nike and have specific product category restrictions. Given the premium value of these marks, they are used on a limited basis and require additional property rights.
Property: Vintage or Vault Marks
Oregon's brand history runs deep. Our Vintage collection features retired logos, wordmarks, and design elements from across Oregon's brand history, giving licensees a way to tap into decades of Duck nostalgia. This is a limited program, available to a select group of licensees who meet the brand and quality standards for the program. This program is currently being formalized, with details on eligibility and available marks coming soon. Interested licensees can contact uobrand@uoregon.edu to learn more or be notified when the program launches.
Property: Marks for Alumni-Owned and -Affiliated Businesses
The university has reserved a small set of marks and patterns for use by University of Oregon alumni-owned and -affiliated businesses that are also licensed with the university to produce retail merchandise. Use of lyrics to the Might Oregon fight song are also reserved for this property. Questions about these assets can be sent to uobrand@uoregon.edu.
Property: Disney Duck Marks
The image of the Oregon Duck mascot is rooted in the Disney brand, creating a unique relationship with the company which requires special care and attention. Through a handshake agreement with Walt Disney in 1947, it was determined that Donald Duck's likeness could serve as the UO's mascot, if it was done in good taste. Agreements evolved through the decades. Today, the Oregon Duck is separate from the Disney Duck and the UO’s use of Disney's intellectual property is limited to retail products and on occasion, Oregon Duck football equipment. It cannot be used for purposes beyond these applications.
Licensing of these marks is managed directly by the Office of Trademark Licensing and Brand Management and is separate from the UO’s vintage marks property. Questions and licensing inquiries can be emailed to uobrand@uoregon.edu.
