To the Regents of the University of Oregon
Gentlemen,
In pursuance of a vote at the meeting of your body held on September 14, 1877, requesting the undersigned to devise and report to you a form of a seal for the University of Oregon, I recommend the following — In the centre of the seal the figure of Mount Hood, and underneath the date of the organization of the school — 1876. On the upper margin of the seal the inscription — “Oregoniae Universitas” and in the lower margin of the same the legend or motto — “Mens agitat molem” — mind moves the mass.
