Tone is mood. It’s how we sound.
While our voice stays consistent, tone shifts based on context—who we’re speaking to, what we’re saying, and where it appears. Tone helps us meet people where they are—without losing who we are.
The goal isn’t to sound different—it’s to sound right for the moment.
Our Baseline Tone Attributes
Across all contexts, our tone starts from the same foundation.
Genuinely friendly and generous
Our kind of friendly wears a hoodie, not a nametag. We’re comfortable with who we are, and happy to meet you where you are. We speak to students as “you” with openness, empathy, and zero pretense.
Fun—with serious inflections
We balance energy and playfulness with purpose. We can move from light to serious without losing credibility. We go from snowboarding to the lab without skipping a beat and never think twice about following a duck when a win is on the line.
Inspired
We’re driven by ideas and possibility. Curiosity leads to discovery—and discovery leads to impact. It’s how a pet store fish turns into breakthrough human genome research, or a busted waffle iron into footwear that kickstarts a global icon.
Serious—but never ponderous
We take our work seriously—but never ourselves. We don’t posture. We prepare. Our wildfire research helps real communities plan for real emergencies. Our youth mental health work is changing how schools show up for the next generation.
Kinetic—but not hyper
We move with urgency and momentum—but always with intention. Athletics play to win—and road-tests the future of sports performance. Our research programs treat ‘urgent’ like a deadline, not a buzzword.
How Tone Works
Tone isn’t fixed—it adapts. What doesn’t change is our underlying voice. Tone shifts based on:
- Audience (who we’re speaking to)
- Context (what we’re communicating)
- Channel (where it appears)
Think of tone like a mixing board. Each situation calls for a different balance. We adjust tone by dialing the key attributes up or down:
- Friendly
- Fun
- Inspired
- Serious
- Kinetic
Examples below show general direction for audiences, however, context and channel may necessitate an adjustment.
