Branded Products and Apparel

Branded merchandise and apparel are great ways to engage with our audiences and promote the Oregon brand. When conceptualizing and crafting promotional products, it's essential to adhere to brand guidelines and licensing protocols, as described below.

For more information on the UO’s trademark licensing policies and procedures, visit the Trademark Licensing and Brand Management webpages.

Please note that UO’s policies and procedures should be adhered to with all purchases as required with UO Purchasing and Contracting Services

Licensing Process and Art Approvals

Products, applications, and designs must be approved by UO Trademark Licensing and Brand Management to ensure compliance with our policies and contractual obligations. Please allow up to 10 business days for processing each request—though we will work hard to reply sooner. Please review unacceptable products prior to selecting your product. To order, you will need to take the following steps for merchandise and apparel.

  1. Select a UO licensed vendor. The University of Oregon has over 40 approved licensed vendors throughout the state and country available for UO departments and programs to work with on branded apparel and merchandise. Please review the list of licensees linked below to find vendors who best match your requirements. If you are unable to find product offerings from licensees that meet your needs, contact uobrand@uoregon.edu.

  2. Develop artwork. Work with your team or vendor and develop artwork that follows the UO brand guidelines. If you have questions about applying the UO brand on a particular product, please reach out to our team at uobrand@uoregon.edu. We encourage you to ask our team first as you are developing unique projects. For more details, visit the Marks and Logos section.

  3. Submit final artwork to the vendor. The vendor is contractually obligated to independently submit any artwork to the UO Trademark Licensing and Brand Management team for approval. Any changes or modifications will be communicated to the vendor and/or department to ensure compliance with all policies and contracts.

Please note: our university has a special relationship with several major brands, and it is critical we adhere to those contractual obligations. There are times when the UO Trademark Licensing and Brand Management team will give one-time or special exceptions on internal orders but more often, they work to enforce standards in a consistent way.

  4. Receive approval. If the product, application, and artwork are approved, UO Trademark Licensing and Brand Management team will provide final sign-off to the vendor that production can begin.

Branded Products and Apparel Guidelines

  • Use official brand fonts only for text on branded apparel and merchandise.

  • Always select products that use our primary color palette. Otherwise, select product colors that are neutral (white, black, grey, or beige). Use the university's approved color palette for all printed and embroidered elements unless the UO Trademark and Licensing team has approved an exception. Old university colors including all secondary color palette colors will be denied.

  • Manufacturer logo or branding cannot appear on the exterior of a garment unless it is a Nike product. An inside neck label is acceptable. The manufacturer logo may appear on hardgoods if it does not conflict with existing university agreements. For clarity, shoes in this context are considered apparel.

  • On orders totaling 1,000 units or more, contact uobrand@uroregon.edu for assistance to ensure compliance with contractual obligations.

  • If you have a sponsor logo(s) on items, please confirm approval with UO Trademark Licensing and Brand Management to ensure there is not a contractual conflict with the sponsor and only list logos in black, white, or non-UO primary colors.

  • Units are not permitted to produce items for retail or to sell without written permission from UO Trademark Licensing and Brand Management.

  • The departmental signature may not be broken apart in any way so that the “O” would stand alone.

  • Trademark registration symbols are generally not required on internal branded product orders for official university use. Contact uobrand@uoregon.edu for any questions.

  • Unique graphics, illustrations, and type treatments are permitted as long as they do not utilize portions of the departmental signature, any of its elements, or other University of Oregon trademarks. The item must include the departmental signature to maintain affiliation with the university. The unique graphic must represent the university in a positive way and may not violate other guidance outlined in the brand guidelines.

  • Internal merchandise orders on lululemon, Adidas, or competing brands are not permitted, including unbranded product lines.

Staff Apparel

University of Oregon departments are required to use their formal or informal departmental marks when ordering staff apparel. Follow apparel guidelines noting policies related to garment colors and other restrictions when preparing your order. Requests for exceptions must be reviewed and approved by the Marketing and Brand Strategy team. Exceptions may be requested through uobrand@uoregon.edu.

Printed Materials vs. Branded Products

Not every item that uses a University of Oregon name or logo is required to be produced by a licensed vendor. Generally, the university differentiates between printed materials and branded products and apparel. Printed materials are broadly defined as collateral printed on paper or a similar material.

When evaluating if something would be classified as a printed material or a branded product, ask yourself:

Can I purchase this item at the campus bookstore?

If you can, then it is usually a branded product. For example, a consumer can’t buy university business cards or an annual report at the campus bookstore, but they can buy shirts, tablecloths, lapel pins, flags, and other items.

A non-exhaustive list of printed materials that are not required to be produced by a licensed vendor*: business cards, letterhead, brochures, pamphlets, annual reports, promotional posters, schedule posters, research posters, course packets, printed newsletters, and magazines.

Note: this list is for items created for official university business and purchased by the university. This does not apply to products using university trademarks available at retail.

Royalties on Internal Products

As of July 1, 2026, all university orders for branded merchandise are subject to a 10% royalty which is assessed on the cost of the item and does not include shipping costs. The royalty is paid by the vendor to the university as part of our standard royalty processes. This was implemented to align with industry standards and help sustain trademark licensing operations that support and protect the university’s brand and trademarks.

To learn more about internal royalties, what products may be exempt, and how to apply for reimbursement on those exemptions, please visit the Internal Royalties page on the Trademark Licensing and Brand Management site.
